Hair tonics, also sold as hair loss tonics, are leave-on liquids that you apply to the scalp. Many on Shopee Singapore are sold with “hair loss” in the name, and they vary a lot in size, format and price.

This page lists eight of them, sets out what you can compare on cost, and covers what to check before you buy. We haven’t tested these products. Product names are the sellers’ own, and we haven’t checked the claims in them.

This article is general information, not medical advice. If you’re losing hair, ask a doctor or pharmacist about the cause and your options.

How to compare hair tonics on cost

Work out the price per ml. Divide the price by the bottle size. A 120ml bottle and a 240ml bottle at similar prices aren’t the same deal.

Check how much the label says to use. How long a bottle lasts depends on the amount and frequency on the product’s own directions, so the cheaper bottle isn’t always cheaper per month. Those directions tell you roughly how many weeks a bottle covers, and so the monthly cost.

Bundles. A bundle like the GRAFEN shampoo, ampoule and tonic set (#8) can cost less than buying the three separately, but only if you’d use all three. Compare it against the single tonic (#5).

Combined listings. Listing #6 is named as both a shampoo and a tonic. Read the listing to see what you actually get before comparing it with a 500ml tonic.

Where it ships from. Some listings ship from overseas (#2 says “Direct from Japan”). Check delivery time, shipping fees and the return terms.

What to check before you buy a hair loss tonic

  • Scalp type on the label. Many tonics say whether they’re meant for oily, dry or sensitive scalps. Check that it matches yours.
  • Read the full ingredient list on the listing or packaging, especially if you’ve reacted to hair or skin products before, or want to avoid fragrance or alcohol.
  • Medicines. If a product lists a medicine as an active ingredient, it isn’t a simple cosmetic. In Singapore, medicines are regulated by the Health Sciences Authority (HSA). Ask a pharmacist or doctor before using it.
  • Ask a doctor or pharmacist first if you have a scalp or skin condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or already use another hair-loss product or medicine.
  • Professional advice. A doctor (a GP or dermatologist) can look at what’s behind your hair loss. Some people also see a trichologist for scalp concerns; trichologists aren’t medical doctors.
  • Stop using it and ask a pharmacist or doctor if your scalp becomes irritated.

Home-made tonics

This guide doesn’t cover home-made recipes. If you’re thinking of putting a home mix on your scalp, ask a doctor or pharmacist first.

FAQ

What is a hair tonic?

A liquid you apply to the scalp and usually leave in. Some sellers call it a hair loss tonic. Ingredients vary by brand, so check the list on each product.

Do hair tonics work for hair loss?

We can’t tell you that, and we don’t make claims about results. Hair loss has different causes. A doctor or pharmacist can help you work out what’s behind yours and which options suit you.

How is a tonic different from a hair loss shampoo?

A shampoo is rinsed out. A tonic is usually applied to the scalp and left on. Check each product’s directions.

Can I use a hair tonic with other hair-loss products?

Ask a pharmacist or doctor before combining products, particularly if one of them is a medicine.

How often should I use a hair tonic?

Follow the directions on the product label.

What should I think about before using one long term?

The ongoing cost (price per ml times how much you use each month), and whether a doctor or pharmacist thinks it’s suitable for you.
