If your roots look flat and greasy by lunchtime, the usual approach is a shampoo made for oily hair, used on the scalp only, plus a conditioner kept on the ends. Below are three oily-scalp products sold on Shopee SG, from about S$13 to S$35, and a wash routine for Singapore’s heat.

Why hair gets oily faster in Singapore

Average humidity here sits around 80%, and most of us sweat on the walk to the MRT before 9am. Sweat and sebum mix on the scalp, the roots stick together and hair looks flat.

Air-conditioned offices then dry out the lengths, so many people end up with oily roots and dry ends at the same time. That is why the products above focus on cleansing the scalp without stripping the rest of the hair.

A wash routine that suits our weather

  1. Wash at night or after exercise. Most people here sweat more in the day, so a wash after the gym or before bed removes the day’s sweat and sunscreen.
  2. Shampoo the scalp, not the lengths. Massage with fingertips for about a minute. The foam that rinses down is enough for the ends.
  3. Conditioner from ear level down. Keeping conditioner off the roots stops it weighing down the roots.
  4. Dry your roots fully. Damp roots in an air-conditioned room go flat fast. A quick blast at the roots helps; our hair dryer guide covers options.
  5. Wash pillowcases and caps weekly. Oil and sweat build up on them and transfer back to clean hair.

Prepping for CNY and year-end events

If you are booking a salon cut or colour before Chinese New Year, slots fill up from December. Our comparison of hair services in Singapore vs Johor Bahru covers prices.

Ask your stylist which of these shampoos suits your colour, since some clarifying shampoos fade colour faster. And if you’re doing a big home clean-out, our CNY spring cleaning guide has the checklist.

FAQ

How often should I wash oily hair in Singapore?

Many people with oily hair here wash daily, and that is fine with a gentle shampoo. If you want to stretch to every other day, a dry shampoo on the off day helps.

Can I use a clarifying shampoo every day?

Deep-cleansing or clarifying formulas are usually meant for weekly use. Check the bottle, and use a regular oily-hair shampoo for daily washes.

Is dry shampoo a replacement for washing?

No. It absorbs oil at the roots for a day, but it doesn’t remove sweat or buildup, so wash normally the next day.

Should I skip conditioner if my hair is oily?

Usually not. Use a small amount on the ends only, especially if you spend long hours in air-con.

What if my scalp is itchy, flaky or sore?

This guide covers cosmetic oiliness only. For anything beyond that, speak to a pharmacist or doctor.
