Short answer: for a new driver in Singapore, a front and rear dashcam with a supercapacitor, built-in GPS and a parking mode covers most needs. Supercapacitors cope with a car baking in an open-air carpark better than built-in batteries. Budget roughly S$220 to S$485 (the X800 price is after a shop voucher) for the dashcams below, plus a microSD card and, for parking mode, a hardwire kit.

What matters in Singapore

  • Heat: cabins get very hot in the sun. Supercapacitor models handle heat better than built-in lithium batteries, which is why brands such as 70mai and Thinkware use them.
  • Front and rear: rear-end knocks in jams are common. A rear camera records who hit whom.
  • Parking mode: records knocks while you are parked. Most models need a hardwire kit for proper parking mode, which a workshop installs.
  • GPS: stamps speed and location on footage, useful as evidence.
  • Night and glare: Sony STARVIS 2 sensors and HDR help with night roads and tunnel exits.
  • Memory card: use a high-endurance microSD card made for continuous recording.

Footage can help in a claim or a report. Ask your insurer how to submit it; see our car insurance for new drivers guide.

Mounting tips

  • Mount the front camera behind the rear-view mirror so it does not block your view.
  • Leave the top right of the windscreen clear for your P plate, which must go there by law. Our P-plate rules and new driver kit guide has the details.
  • Format the card in the camera every month or so and check a clip now and then.

FAQ

Is a supercapacitor dashcam really better in Singapore?

For heat, supercapacitors are generally more tolerant than lithium batteries, which is why many Singapore sellers highlight them. Battery models still work; parking in shade helps.

Do I need parking mode?

If you park in open-air or busy carparks, it helps record knocks while you are away. It usually needs a hardwire kit.
