Why a fan and aircon work well together

The aircon cools and dries the air. The fan doesn’t cool the air at all, but air moving over your skin makes you feel cooler. Put the two together and you get the same comfort at a higher setting.

NEA’s suggestions (NEA energy-saving tips):

• Set the aircon at 25°C. Each degree higher saves about 3% of utility costs.
• Run the aircon for about an hour, then switch to the fan: about 23% saved.
• Use a fan instead of the aircon when you can: about 26% saved.

NEA bases these on a 4-tick 2.6kW single-split aircon, a 50W fan and $0.29 per kWh before GST, so treat them as a guide.

How to set it up

• Pre-cool, then raise. Start the aircon at 25°C with the fan on. Once the room feels comfortable, try 26°C with the fan still running.
• Point the fan to move air across the room, not straight at the aircon. An air circulator aimed at the far wall or slightly upward spreads the cool air from the unit.
• Use the aircon timer. Let the aircon switch off after a few hours and leave the fan running. NEA says the room stays cool for a while after the aircon goes off.
• Close curtains and doors. A fan can’t help much if warm air keeps coming in.

Air circulator or regular fan?

A regular standing fan blows a wide, soft breeze at you. An air circulator pushes a tighter column of air further, so it mixes the whole room’s air.
