How to choose a portable aircon in Singapore
1. Match the BTU to your room
BTU (British Thermal Units) measures cooling power. Too little and the unit runs flat out without cooling the room. Too much and you pay for power you don’t need. As a rough guide:
- 9,000–10,000 BTU: HDB bedrooms and studies, up to about 250 sqft (about 20 m²)
- 12,000–13,000 BTU: HDB master bedrooms and small living rooms, up to about 300 sqft
- 15,000–18,000 BTU: large HDB living rooms and condo bedrooms, up to about 360 sqft
- 20,000 BTU and up: open-plan condos and commercial spaces, about 400 sqft
Another rule of thumb: start at 9,000 BTU for the first 20 m², and add about 2,000 BTU for every extra 9.5 m². Size up for west-facing rooms, kitchens or rooms with lots of appliances.
2. Single hose, dual hose or evaporative cooler
- Single hose: cheaper and easier to install, with one hose to a window adapter. It pushes room air outside, so warm, humid outdoor air leaks back in through gaps. Best for small rooms.
- Dual hose: one hose draws outside air to cool the machine and the other expels hot air. This avoids negative pressure, so the room stays cooler and the unit works less hard. Best for bigger rooms.
- Evaporative coolers: cool air by evaporating water. They use less power but work best in dry air, so in humid Singapore they cool far less than a real aircon. See our guide to portable air conditioners without an exhaust.
3. Check the noise level
Aim for 55 dB or lower if the unit is going in a bedroom or home office. A higher figure is easier to live with in a kitchen or living room. Manufacturers usually list a decibel rating, and some brands let you hear the unit in-store.
4. Think about your HDB or condo
HDB flats: most have limited window access. Dual-hose units cool better but need a proper vent setup; single-hose units are easier to fit. Most models come with a window kit, though HDB windows may need some adapting.
Condos: check your lease and the MCST rules. Some condos restrict portable aircon installations or have noise rules.
Humidity: Singapore’s 80%+ humidity makes the aircon work harder. A dedicated dehumidify mode is worth paying for.
5. Budget for running costs
A 10,000 BTU unit typically draws about 4.5 A, or roughly 1,000 W at 230 V. At current Singapore electricity rates, running a 12,000 BTU unit 8 hours a day costs roughly S$60–90 a month. Dual-hose and NEA energy-compliant models cost less to run.
6. Plan the installation and maintenance
Portable aircons are easy to install, but they need a window or opening for the exhaust hose. To set one up:
- Choose the spot. Place it near a window so the exhaust hose can reach, with space around it for airflow. Avoid direct sun and heat-producing appliances.
- Fit the exhaust hose. Attach one end to the back of the unit and the other to the window kit. Keep the hose as straight as possible, because kinks and bends restrict airflow.
- Secure the window kit. The panels should fit snugly in the window frame. Seal any gaps with foam tape or weather stripping so hot air can’t get back in.
- Plug in and switch on. Set the temperature and fan speed. The room should start cooling within a few minutes.
Most units collect water in a tank that needs emptying, although self-evaporating models need much less draining. Clean the filter regularly (see the FAQ below).

Frequently asked questions
Portable aircon vs window or split unit: which is better?
Split units are more efficient and quieter. Portable aircons are better for renters and anyone who can’t do a permanent installation. For temporary or rental situations, a portable usually wins.
Are portable aircons effective?
Yes, for cooling one room. They pull in warm room air, cool it and blow it back out, venting the heat through the hose. How well they work depends on matching the BTU to the room size.
Can a portable aircon cool a whole house?
No. Portable aircons are designed for spot cooling in one room. For a whole flat you would need several units, and split systems are more efficient for that.
Do portable aircons bring in outside air?
A single-hose unit does so indirectly. It pumps room air outside, which lowers the room’s air pressure, so hot, humid outdoor air leaks in through gaps and doors. A dual-hose unit draws outside air through one hose to cool the machine and expels the hot air through the other, so it doesn’t pull outdoor air into the room.
How much will my electricity bill go up?
Expect roughly S$50–100 more a month for about 8 hours of daily use, depending on the unit’s BTU and efficiency.
How many watts does a portable aircon use?
A typical 10,000 BTU unit uses about 4.5 A, or roughly 1,000 W at 230 V. Actual use can be 5% higher or 10% lower depending on the unit’s efficiency.
How can I reduce portable aircon noise?
First make sure the unit stands on a level floor. A small, low-pile rug underneath reduces vibration. A sound blanket around the compressor (usually the loudest part) can cut noise further.
Can I use a portable aircon in an HDB flat?
Yes, as long as you can vent the hose properly. Most models include a window kit, though HDB windows may need some adapting. See the installation steps above.
How do I clean a portable aircon?
Wash or vacuum the air filter regularly. For a deeper clean, open the unit with a screwdriver and vacuum the condenser and evaporator coils. Then empty the water tank, clean the drip tray and exhaust hose, and put everything back together. You will need a screwdriver, a vacuum cleaner, compressed air, a soft cloth and 3% hydrogen peroxide.
What about warranty and servicing in Singapore?
EuropAce, Novita and Midea offer local warranty service. Buy from official stores or authorised retailers for proper warranty cover, and avoid parallel imports for appliances this expensive.
Where can I buy a portable aircon or exhaust hose in Singapore?
Shopee and Amazon.sg both sell portable aircons and replacement exhaust hoses, which come in different lengths and diameters. Check the hose diameter against your unit before buying.
Our verdict
For most Singapore homes, the EuropAce EPAC13T3E offers the best balance of price, performance and practicality.
On a tighter budget, the EGAC10A6 or the Midea MPPF-09CRN1 will cool a small bedroom. For app control, the Wi-Fi models are genuinely useful day to day. For a big open space without a window to vent, look at the EHAC25DH3WH hybrid.
